Close on the heels of Dr OP Gupta, a true legend in the world of medicine, we bid farewell to another remarkable stalwart todayโthe incredible Dr AP Jain.
He also decided to hang up his boots today.
If Dr OP Gupta was the renowned Sachin Tendulkar, then there’s no doubt that Dr AP Jain embodied the fearless and swashbuckling spirit of Virender Sehwag. His illustrious career spanning five glorious decades at MGIMS has left a lasting mark in Sevagram, and his influence on thousands of medical students through his teaching and clinical skills is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Dr AP Jain’s journey from Bulandshahr to Sevagram in the summer of 1974, spanning nearly 1100 kilometers, speaks volumes about his passion for academic medicine. As a distinguished alumnus of KGMC, he carried with him the knowledge and values instilled by his alma mater, ready to tread on a path that would shape the lives of countless medical students and residents.
Though coming from a family with strong business roots, Dr Jain’s decision to take on a full-time teaching assignment with no private practice might have been surprising to some, but it showcased his deep desire to make a meaningful impact in the medical education landscape.
Dr AP Jain’s teaching methods were designed to be dynamic, making the pursuit of knowledge an exhilarating experience. He was never one to shy away from taking innovative approaches to complex medical cases, just as Sehwag would fearlessly take on the fiercest of bowlers.
His love for teaching was evident in the way he engaged with medical students and residents, sharing his wisdom and expertise selflessly. For him, the joy of witnessing his students grow and excel was akin to the joy of a business visionary witnessing the flourishing of their enterprises.
A true teacher at heart, Dr Jain believed in the power of preparation. Before every class, he immersed himself in textbooks, taking copious notes to ensure that he taught in a style that touched the chordae of the students in the classrooms. Teaching was not merely a profession for him; it was a passion that allowed him to grow as a clinician and improve his ability to convey complex medical concepts to his patients with clarity and compassion.
Dr Jain’s insatiable appetiteโhe was a compulsive book loverโfor learning defined him as a lifelong student. He understood that the journey of medicine was one of continuous exploration and discovery, and he embraced this ethos wholeheartedly.
In an era where the department heads and the Deans are struggling to find dedicated and proficient preceptors for medical students, Dr AP Jain stands as a shining example of someone who poured his heart into teaching. Although his teaching sessions were known for his caustic wit and sarcastic remarks, they reflected his refusal to compromise on the quality of education he provided.
His approach to patient care was not only highly skilled but also unorthodox and unconventional, making him a standout personality in the medical world. Just like Sehwag’s unyielding confidence on the cricket pitch, Dr AP Jain’s confidence in his abilities was infectious, instilling a sense of assurance in all those around him.
He firmly believed that history and physical examination were the very essence of medicine, and he took great pride in applying these principles at the patient’s bedside.
His ward rounds and teaching sessions were filled with captivating moments and legendary one-liners that left a lasting impact on his students. Learning from him was a genuine delight, as his words carried the wisdom of a seasoned player and the enthusiasm of an ardent fan.
With a keen sense of punctuality and discipline, Dr Jain would arrive precisely at 8 am in the department for the PG session. His presence in the room set the tone for an attentive and focused learning environment. As a stickler for preparedness, he pushed the postgraduates to excel, ensuring they mastered the subject matter and delivered their presentations and cases, accurately and precisely. As one who seldom suffered fools gladly, his mere presence in the seminar hall was enough to create a sense of discipline and expectancy in the hall.
He fervently encouraged students, residents, and professionals to practice medicine in a humane, holistic, and individualized mannerโvalues he believed to be the essence of medical education. During his bedside rounds, he often quoted Osler’s wise words, emphasizing the importance of treating the patient, not just the disease. His teaching philosophy centered on shifting the focus from the ailment to the person behind it, fostering a deeper connection between the medical practitioner and the patient.
Dr AP Jain’s last decade was a testament to his unwavering dedication to medical education and his profound love for teaching. Even after stepping down as the department head in 2010, his commitment to shaping the future of medical professionals extended far beyond his institute’s boundaries.
His association with the National Board of Examinations, Geriatric Medicine, and Diabetes courses showcased his immense pride in contributing to aspiring doctors’ academic progress. Dr Jain’s deep interest in DNB Family Medicine led him to spearhead this course at MGIMS for almost a decade. His goal was to equip his students with the same competence as MD residents, preparing them to handle diverse medical challenges. Under his devoted guidance, the DNB Family Medicine program at MGIMS earned the prestigious distinction of being rated number one in the country, a true testament to his exceptional teaching and mentoring prowess.
Beyond his remarkable clinical skills, Dr AP Jain’s ability to mentor and shape the careers of countless medical students has been nothing short of extraordinary. His residents consider him almost like a demigod. Many of us owe our passion for medicine and our success as healthcare professionals to his invaluable guidance and unwavering support.
As we bid farewell to Dr Jain, an extraordinary teacher and clinician, we acknowledge the end of an era filled with brilliance and dedication, much like the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag from the cricket pitch. His legacy as an inspiring teacher, a compassionate physician, and a lifelong learner will continue to shine bright, leaving a lasting impact on all those whose lives he touched. Our hearts are filled with gratitude and admiration for his remarkable journey.
Thank you, Dr Jain, for being a true maestro in the field of medicine and for leaving an enduring impact on all of us who were fortunate enough to be under your tutelage. Your contributions have been nothing short of extraordinary, and you will forever be remembered as a beacon of inspiration in the medical community. As Dr Karunakar Trivedi wrote today, may your retirement be as fulfilling and enriching as your remarkable career.
Very few are aware of Dr Jainโs fascination with the golden era of Hindi cinema, particularly his admiration for Hemant Kumar. May I borrow Hemant Kumarโs famous song from “Bees Saal Baad” to pay homage to Dr AP Jain-

He had inculcate such value to his students that we always stay indebted throughout our lives.
Sir is excellent teacher, who always stay ahead of his time, visionary whoโs ready to help his students in all the time and every aspects of carrier.
I am short of word to say anything more about his mesmerising and powered carriers.
He guided us supported us during entire PG days and rest of our carrier. I am fortunate enough to see your teaching in clinics, class room, OPD rooms, ICU or ward rounds.
And remembering those days was really a great fortune to me. Itโs like a small plant growing under shelter of sequoia giant.
I am very overwhelmed that I followed those footsteps even then and now.
Thank you sir for all your guidance and blessings.

Every student who has walked in the wide corridors of MGIMS, will eternally be in debt to the fantastic teachers , who not only taught the science and art of medicine, but like master craftsmen, moulded all of us into successful and purposeful professionals. While writing his good bye to respected Dr A P Jain, SP ended with the famous song เคฌเฅเคเคผเคฐเคพเคฐ เคเคฐ เคเฅ เคนเคฎเฅเค เคฏเฅเค เคจ เคเคพเคเคฏเฅ
I am certain that at that moment Jain sir would have been humming

I’m fortunate to be with Dr Gupta Sir, Dr Jain Sir, Dr Kalantri and Dr Jaju for 10 years ๐
Our most revered teachers, shall always be remembered in building us all.
Again wonder full writing Dr Kalantri. Wity comments, bedside teaching, and dedication of Jain sir was unparallel. At that time I use to wonder, how a KGMC passed Dr. is permanently settled in a rural college…. His MD batchmate, and friend was most popular physician in. Varanasi. and was my local. Medical guardian… After returning from every vacations , I use to visit Jain sir. residence on behalf of his friend.with his message s.. So. I remember the crowded OPD of medicine and surgery during the period 80’s dedicated doctors like Dr O P Gupta, Dr. AP Jain, Dr. Trivedi, Dr. Mehta ,Dr. Narang. Other Departments were also having equally good doctors. That was the golden period of MGIMS .Praying God to have legacy to continue
Medicine Department will miss the Duo, Dr. OPG and Dr. Jain as they were the founder pillars along with Dr. Jajoo. With respect and regards for a teacher par excellence.
I pray for a healthy, happy and a long life. My heartfelt gratitude for such an illustrious and exemplary Guru.
Dr Jain sir a teacher par excellence,He has not only infused skills of medicine into many of us but also taught us humbleness and compassionate care. His lectures on rounds and case presentation still resonate in our mind.

Legendary teacher great administrator .. Role model for generations to come..Medicine was made interesting and equally fascinating with you Sir..Thank u sir..๐ There are 2 APJโs we know very well and very proud of..One is former president and the other one is nearer and dearer.. even more.. Salute and pranamss Sirโค๏ธ
Jain sir is an extraordinary , unparalleled talented clinician who would believe in clinical signs and symptoms for disease diagnosis.
He was the one who suspected that my mother might be having SLE. I still remember he just ordered a single test ANA , rather than ordering a battery of 100 tests. My mother was a fan of Jain Sir, he was next to God for her. Unfortunately she succumbed to CKD in 2020.
Jain sir is like a walnut, tough and hard from outside but soft at heart. While I was doing my final year residency in Sevagram, being a new mother as my first child was born , countless patients and presentations every week, work pressure, thesis deadlines, village visits and Harrison. Jain sir was one of the only ones who could gauge my horrible condition that time . It was because of him I didn’t have a nervous breakdown.
He is one of the best teachers I will be indebted to forever and ever and ever for shaping me into what I am today.
I wish him good health and happiness !
An incredible homage for a great mentor.
Great teacher and greater human being A man of his words and so good by heart and always was hard on students just to discipline them . Hats off of a genius in Medicin
Great clinician, excellent teacher, a true legend in medicine department.
His clinical bedside teaching is still guiding us in our everyday practice..
Immense gratitude and respect for him.
No words can express how thankful and blessed I am to be trained by a legend like him who has not just given his clinical pearls to us but has trained us to be compassionate and empathetic towards patients.
Have a healthy life ahead sir.
Wish him best of health and happiness.
Wishing you a long and happy healthy retirement. You have been and will be a inspiration for us all!
A great teacher and a wonderful stalwart
Such great personalities have added value to medical education especially at MGIMS. It’s difficult to find such dedicated teachers and clinicians in the present era. MGIMS had stalwarts who were rare to be found.Respected Dr. A P Jain Sir deserves a lifetime acheivement award along with Respected Dr O P Gupta Sir. Both have their own contributions for the institution. Good wishes to both ๐๐๐๐
Another beautiful message Sir !! No one can be as practical, witty, clear, and real as Dr Jain Sir !! His few words conveyed everything. The department has suffered a dual loss today ! My regards and best wishes for Sirโs retirement ๐๐
Farewell to you dear Jain Sir. A fitting tribute to a true legend. Your calm and reassuring presence will be missed at MGIMS.
Once i saw Sir in Jeans walking the hospital corridoor and thats when i knew he was a true rockstar, a true OG๐ค
A teacher par excellence and a brilliant personality ! I feel so blessed to be his student. Regards and best wishes to Jain Sir for a healthy and happy life ahead ๐
Big void created by departure of two stalwarts of medicine department. Had privilege of being in his unit throughout my stay in department. Only through sincerity and honesty one could win his trust. Very charming personality.
Jain Sir is nothing less than the God of Medicine.
No student of his would have remained unmoved by his passion for, both, medical practice and medical training. He not only taught us the nuances of clinical medicine but also taught us how to approach medicine & mankind.
Shat Shat Pranaam, Sir..
Sir, your writings are superb…
Prof Gupta Sir was Dean when we joined MGIMS so lot of fond memories of those days …
We can never forget clinics of Jain Sir…. He would perfectly pick up t most notorious candidate and question him/her
We are highly inspired by Jain Sir..
He had taught us not just medicine but also how to care for our patients..
One day while he was taking our case in ward he abruptly went to another patient to inquire as he saw some one near that patient while teaching..
We were all curious and later just found out that he truly cared for that patient who was abandoned by his family and he thought his family had arrived…
That day I learnt how to care for a patient holistically..
It is quite disheartning to hear that Dr APJain ,also left teaching following Dr OP Gupta’s retirement. His clinical acumen had helped many colleages to stick to MGIMS.under his care. His approach. to clinical teaching will be remembered by multitude of students. May God help him to live a happy post retired life
A teacher par excellence and another legend in department of Medicine. Remember the bedside clinics very vividlyโฆ regards and wishes for good health ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ
Great teacher & Superb Clinician,on the top a great human being.
๐Respect n wishes for him.
I still remember sir good handwriting on blackboard and quality of teaching was marvalous I pray to god for his good health due to these teachers we all are here
Two legendary teachers retiring from medicine department out of trio in one day is a big blow but the footprints of dedication left behind by these stalwarts would go on inspiring the generations to come but no one can match Dr Jain Sir
Apart from a skillfull clinician his one liners still prevent us from making mistakes and help clinching diagnosis
Dr APJain sir was the one who pushed me to research during my internship by giving me a task of retrospective study of hepatic tumours in MGIMS which I completed in record time
After every MD exam all appearing students were invited for dinner at either jain sirs house or gupta sirs house with examiners indeed a lavish one
Sir your imprint on students will continue to guide them and we wish you a healthy and lively future
As a student of his I am amazed at the work ethics of Sir, his smile and his wit were legendary. My best wishes for a wonderful life ahead. ๐๐ป๐น

I will always picture Jain Sir as unambiguous, bold, and willing to take decisions. Despite uncertainty of clinical medicine, Jain sir taught us to take clear decisions, not only in medicine but also in all aspects of life .
As the two of the four pillars of medicine walk into the sunset, I can only feel proud and lucky to have taught by such astute men. They were like pearls of wisdom, principles and straightforwardness, a trait seldom seen today. I and my predecessors and many batches down the line can vouch for their clinical acumen, skills, punctuality and dedication. I hope and pray to the almighty that the two remaining pillars in your and Jajoo sir form keep on enlightening and showing the coming generation the greatness of clinical skills, humanness and straightforwardness. I remain forever indebted to you in particular and professor Gupta sir, professor Jain sir and professor Jajoo sir. Pranam sir ๐
