Farhad grew up reading Tarun Bharat, Navneet, Udyam Marmik, Kalidasa’s Meghdoot, and the Ramayana. In his SSC examination, he took Sanskrit as his third language and scored 100 out of 100. He is a Marathi-speaking Muslim from a small town in Vidarbha, and he would like you to understand that this is not a contradiction — it is simply who he is.

The Boy from Digras

Farhad was born in Amravati — at Dhapu Bai Jain Hospital — in 1954, into a family originally from Digras, a town 74 kilometres southwest of Yavatmal. His father lectured in Marathi at Phulsing Naik Mahavidyalaya, Pusad. His mother was a homemaker. The household subscribed to Bhavan’s Journal and Blitz. The children read historical and mythological books.

His schooling moved through Dinbai School, Digras; premedical at Vidarbha Mahavidyalaya, Amravati; and first BSc at Amolakchand Mahavidyalaya, Yavatmal, where he topped the college — Vijayalaxmi Kane finishing second. He entered GMC Nagpur in 1973.

In his first MBBS days, he shared a room in Hanuman Nagar near Tikoni Garden with Waqar Mohiuddin Taji and Thomas Chacko, before the three of them moved into the GMC hostels in 1975. He developed close friendships with Shyam Bawage, Deepak Bahekar, Sharad Adoni, Satish Bhaskarwar, Sudhir Sathe and Chandramohan Hajari. Two classmates — Manik Khune and Khemraj Wankar — pushed him through the final MBBS hurdle in ways he has never forgotten. “I have no words to thank them,” he says.

Mumbai, Then the Gulf

After completing his urban internship at Sir J.J. Hospital, Mumbai and his rural posting at Parshivani, 38 kilometres north of Nagpur, Farhad’s brother — a lawyer in Mumbai — called him to the city. He did house jobs in Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Paediatrics in Mumbai hospitals, then built a successful private practice in Andheri West, Juhu Lane, over many years.

In February 1995, he made the decision that still puzzles some who knew him: he shut a thriving Andheri practice, weighed the pluses and minuses carefully, and moved to Al Khobar in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. He worked as a company physician with the Saad Group, providing primary care to a patient population drawn largely from India and Bangladesh, with a tertiary hospital nearby for referrals.

The Gulf, however, was less stable than it appeared. The 2014 oil price crash brought the Saad Group to its knees. Thousands of employees — including Farhad — found themselves stranded, underpaid, and uncertain. The Indian government’s intervention, led by the then-minister Sushma Swaraj, ensured food and shelter for those left behind. Saudi authorities helped with repatriation. Most went home.

Farhad stayed. He found a new sponsor, renewed his contract, and adapted — as he has always adapted, in the quiet, unhurried way of a man who reads Sanskrit poetry and grew up knowing two languages before most people learn to manage one. By 2020, when he had planned to return to India, the pandemic intervened. He found himself posted to a remote desert clinic, seeing fewer patients, taking what comfort he could from the reduced exposure to infection.

He writes about these years with the unsentimental precision of a man who has learned not to expect life to be fair, but continues to show up regardless.

What Remains

Farhad lives and works in Al Khobar, on the Persian Gulf coast. His two sons — Zeeshan and Zain — are chemical engineers based in the Kingdom. His wife, Mushtari Naaz, is a homemaker. His residential address in the archive lists a flat in Andheri West, Mumbai — the city he left thirty years ago and has not quite left behind.

The Marathi newspapers he read as a boy in Digras — Tarun Bharat, Saptahik Swadesh — are still out there. Whether he still reads them from a desert clinic in the Eastern Province is not recorded. But the man who scored 100 out of 100 in Sanskrit, who memorised the Kalidasa he loved, and who taught himself to read the world through more than one language, has found ways to carry his roots wherever he has gone.

His father taught Marathi at a college in Pusad, and enrolled his son in a Marathi-medium primary school in Digras because, as he saw it, there was nothing wrong with knowing your own language well.
