The biggest culprit is not the surgeon\u2019s fee, the ICU monitor, or the hospital bed. It is the medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In rural India, nearly three-quarters of healthcare spending vanishes into the pharmacy. I did not need a journal to validate that number; I saw it unfold daily in Sevagram\u2014quietly and repeatedly, like a slow leak that eventually empties a household. A daily-wage laborer would arrive breathless after a heart attack, or a farmer would be carried in after a snakebite.
