Dr Kalantriโs thoughts on Favipiravir, a new oral drug launched in India yesterday by Glenmark to fight Covid19 infection. He is alarmed that the Indian drug authorities have approved the drug although it is yet to be tested in randomized controlled trials.
We do not know if it would benefit or harm. More importantly, what is the point in giving an expensive medicine ( the 15-day course would cost Rs 14,000) to mildly ill COVID patients, when almost all of them are likely to get better of their own- drug or no drug.
In his Lancet piece he wrote that even during desperate times, we should not abandon logical thinking and scientific approach. There is no point in clutching at every fragile straw that we find our way- it would never help us stay afloat.
